지구 내핵의 회전 속력은 내핵을 통과하는 지진파를 검출하고 분석하여 확인할 수 있습니다. 지구의 내핵이 지구의 나머지 부분보다 빠르게 회전하는 것으로 추정된다는 주장은 1996년에 처음 제기되었습니다.

하지만, 이 주장은 내핵의 회전이 외핵에서 일어나는 열적인 대류 때문에 발생한다는 가설과 상충하였기 때문에 추후의 연구가 더욱 중요했습니다. 그런데, 과학자들은 2005년에 발표된 연구에서도 비슷한 결과를 얻었습니다.

이번에 네이처 지오사이언스 2011년 2월호에 게재된 논문에서도 내핵은 여전히 지구의 다른 부분보다 더 빠르게 회전한다는 것이 확인되었습니다. 다만, 빠른 정도가 1백만년에 0.1~1도 수준으로 이전의 연구에 비해서는 훨씬 작은 수치입니다.
